Why The Honeycombs Are Hexagonal?

Why Bees Need Durable Structure
Needless to say, the formation of honeycomb demands a lot of hard work and skills. Honey bees use the wax, which is secreted from their abdominal glands. But for making even one ounce of wax honey bees are required to intake about two tablespoons of honey. A single honey bee colony is capable of producing 300-500 pounds of honey. Therefore in order to hold this much amount of honey in the comb, it is important to build a sturdy, elastic and durable structure.

They can utilize this energy for other purposes like the accumulation of pollen and nectar from one flower to another. As this shape is apt for providing the extra strength needed to survive tons of weight, pressure and adversities. Even if a lighter material is used to make something in a hexagonal structure, it is capable of holding a lot of force. Therefore bees are considered extremely intelligent mathematicians and architects. They always try to make the process economical by wasting the least amount of material resources.
The axes of the honeycomb are made quasi horizontal with non-angled rows. Every cell in a comb has two vertically oriented walls and both lower and upper parts of the cell are made of two angled walls. The part of the cell which opens is the dorsal part while the ventral part is called a bottom. The gradient of the slope of the cell ranges between 9 and 14 degrees towards the dorsal part.
Benefits of Hexagonal Shapes
Hexagonal shapes also help in easy placement of the cells together but the queen cells are irregular and lumpy which are usually constructed singly. Another benefit of hexagonal shapes is that its tiling leads to the partition with equal sized cell which reduces the total perimeter of the cell. The cells are arranged in such a way that opposing honeycomb layers lie next to each other and each facet of the closed ends being shared by opposing cells.
